Appian is a process platform: process orchestration, its own data fabric of synchronised record types, RPA, document processing, case management and AI agents in one product, sold by edition and per user, per app.
Every Appian cell carries its source number; the sources are listed at the foot of the page.
| Question | Appian | Lima SmartApps |
|---|---|---|
| Where the app's rows live | In Appian's Data Fabric as synchronised record types: 'connect disparate systems using a data fabric that unifies data without the burden of migration'; a 'patented data engine… avoiding the latency of zero-copy approaches' [2]. Editions cap synced rows: Standard one source and 4M rows, Advanced 20M rows, Premium unlimited [3]; release 26.3 added zero-copy connections for MariaDB and MySQL and removed the 50M-row sync cap [4]. | App screens read rows in place in the system that owns them (SAP, Oracle, Snowflake, Databricks, Salesforce, ServiceNow, Workday) through data handlers; the platform keeps definitions, instances and the log, and makes zero copies of source rows to build an app. |
| Reaching SAP and Oracle | Through connectors and the API integration layer; SAP and Oracle are named among the pre-built connected systems, with 'hundreds of prebuilt connectors' on the AppMarket [5]. Rows are synchronised into record types before an app uses them [2]. | SAP S/4HANA and ECC through released read interfaces, change capture where allowed, BAPIs and IDocs for writes, inside SAP's published guidance (Notes 3255746, 382318, 2971304); Oracle Fusion through REST resources and BICC, EBS through JDBC and open interfaces. |
| Snowflake and Databricks | Available as AppMarket connected-system listings; unnamed on the Data Fabric product page [2][5]. | Native connectors to Snowflake, Databricks and Microsoft Fabric; the Backbone lands history in a conformed model; decisions recorded beside it with MERGE. |
| Approvals and case work | Process modeler with tasks and approvals; Case Management Studio (Advanced and Premium editions) [3]. | Approval flows with levels, an alternate per level, delegation, series or parallel paths, a time limit per level and an escalation user; assignments; multi-party signatures; all on one engine. |
| Audit record | Process history and case history per instance; 'auditability' is a stated platform property [6]. | Append-only, hash-chained log per instance: person, step, values, decision, notifications, write-back acknowledgement, app version; auditor self-service screen. |
| AI-assisted building | Composer generates 'complete Appian applications including user interfaces, workflows' (release 25.4, Nov 2025); Agent Studio for agents; 26.3 (Mar 2026) adds multi-file input; a reinsurer reported Sprint 0 planning cut from 80 hours to 5 [4][7]. | Drafts of levels, lanes, screens and criteria from a plain description; screens generated from rules and hierarchies; drafts pass the same validator, preview and gate; structure crosses to an external model, rows stay. |
| Pricing unit | Three editions 'priced per user, per month, per app'; amounts are quoted, with AI Actions quotas per edition (200K, 500K, 1M per month) [3]. | Platform capacity tiers (32C to 128C); apps, screens, instances and users included; the price is written before the work starts; pricing principles published. |
| Trial | Community Edition: an unlimited-time developer site with a business email [8]. | A guided first-app session on your live data (about 30 minutes); the showcase estate for demonstrations; a self-service trial tier is a decision pending (see review notes). |

Choose Appian when the process itself is the product you want to buy, with RPA, document processing and case management from one vendor, and when synchronising the working set of rows into the platform suits the process, for example public-sector case management or insurance underwriting where the case record is the system of record. Appian's guarantee of a first project in 8 weeks and its long analyst record are real advantages for a buyer standardising on one process vendor [6][9].
Lima SmartApps suit the processes whose rows already live in SAP, Oracle, the lakes and the business applications, and should stay there: the screen reads the order line in SAP and the decision is written back through the BAPI, with the acknowledgement logged. Building starts the day the system is connected, the access rules of each source apply at read time, and the price is by platform capacity with apps included.
The app catalogue shows forty app types with, for each, the objects read in place in SAP S/4HANA, Oracle Fusion, Snowflake and Databricks and the interface used for the write-back.
Facts change; re-check the sources at each review and re-date the page.
Every Appian statement is quoted or paraphrased from Appian's own pages or from dated analyst material, with a source number. The 'when to choose them' section is written to be true.
Yes. Many companies run several application platforms. SmartApps read and write the systems of record, so an app built elsewhere and an app built in Lima can act on the same SAP order through the same released interfaces.

Bring one process. In the first session we register the data handlers on your systems and run the first screen in place, so the comparison is made on your data.
